In the crisp autumn air of October 5, 2022, the life of 18-year-old Elijah Daniel DeWitt, a promising male high school football star, was tragically cut short. The Jefferson High School senior was in Lawrenceville, Georgia, enjoying an evening with his girlfriend at Dave & Buster's at Sugarloaf Mills mall. What began as a night of leisure ended in violence in the parking lot, where DeWitt was found with fatal gunshot wounds.
The news of his death sent shockwaves through his community, where he was known as a talented wide receiver with dreams of playing college football.
The investigation into the shooting quickly revealed that this was not a random act of violence. Gwinnett County police detectives determined that DeWitt was familiar with his assailants, having encountered them just days prior to the deadly confrontation. An altercation took place in the parking lot before the shooting. Investigators later uncovered text messages indicating the suspects had gone to the mall that night with the intention of robbing someone, and tragically, DeWitt became their target. Though unarmed, he reportedly tried to fight back before being shot.
Within days, law enforcement tracked two suspects to Anderson, South Carolina, nearly 100 miles from the crime scene. Kemare Matthew Bryan, 18, and Chandler Zion Richardson, 19, both from Lawrenceville, were arrested and extradited back to Georgia. They faced a litany of charges, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Over a year later, in November 2023, a third suspect, 19-year-old Kpadeh Jones of Lawrenceville, was also arrested and charged with malice murder in connection with DeWitt's death.
In June 2024, the case saw a significant development when Kemare Bryan and Chandler Richardson appeared in court. Both pleaded guilty to felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. For his role in the murder, Bryan was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional five years. Richardson received a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole, plus five years. The case against the third suspect, Kpadeh Jones, continues.
