In the pre-dawn hours of Sunday, September 30, 2018, a dispute in a Lawrenceville, Georgia, apartment complex parking lot escalated to a fatal conclusion. Marlon Walker, a 32-year-old male, was found by Gwinnett County police officers with at least one gunshot wound to his chest in the parking lot of the Durant at Sugarloaf apartments on St. Marlowe Drive. The call reporting shots fired came in around 2:30 a.m.
Despite the efforts of officers to render aid, Walker succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses reported seeing a physical altercation between at least two men in the parking lot just before the shooting. After the shots were fired, the suspect, or suspects, fled the area. The Gwinnett County Police Department's homicide unit immediately began an investigation into the death of Walker.
The investigation quickly led to the identification of a suspect. On Tuesday, October 2, 2018, authorities arrested 24-year-old Marcus Harris of Albany, Georgia, in connection with the shooting. The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Squad apprehended Harris in Riverdale. Following his arrest, Harris was transported to the Gwinnett County Jail.
Marcus Harris was subsequently charged with felony murder and aggravated assault for his alleged role in Marlon Walker's death. He was being held at the Gwinnett County Jail without bond. The motive for the altercation and subsequent shooting was not immediately released by investigators.
