In the quiet suburbs of Acworth, Georgia, a disagreement between roommates culminated in a fatal shooting. On the evening of Sunday, March 3, 2019, Paulding County deputies were dispatched to a residence on North Springs Way following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival at the home, they discovered the body of 43-year-old Billy Sherman Vaughn Jr., a white male, who was deceased inside the house he shared with his roommate.
The ensuing investigation by the Paulding County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation quickly identified the roommate, 40-year-old Max Daniel Penny, as the alleged shooter. According to detectives, Penny had shot Vaughn, leading to his death. The motive for the shooting was not immediately released to the public, as the case remained under active investigation. The authorities, however, moved swiftly to take Penny into custody.
Following the incident, Max Daniel Penny was arrested and formally charged with felony voluntary manslaughter in connection with the death of his roommate, Billy Sherman Vaughn Jr. He was subsequently booked into the Paulding County Jail, where he was held without bond.
