On August 16, 2020, a dispute between Zachary Shaw and his girlfriend escalated, leading to the 27-year-old white male's tragic death in Acworth, Georgia. The argument, which began as the couple left a neighbor's house on Emerald Willow Drive, continued through text messages and phone calls. During these exchanges, Shaw allegedly made threats to harm his girlfriend and others who were at the gathering.
Present at the neighbor's home was 35-year-old Brian Lee Parker and his wife. Instead of alerting law enforcement about the threats, Parker decided to take matters into his own hands. He retrieved an AR-15 rifle from his residence and, accompanied by an acquaintance, went to confront Shaw, who was down the street by this time. The confrontation turned fatal as Parker shot Shaw seven times with the rifle.
Acworth police officers responded to a call about the shooting and found Shaw lying outside a home on Willow Street, near the intersection with Emerald Willow Drive. He was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Brian Lee Parker was arrested shortly after the shooting and was charged with felony murder and aggravated assault. His case went to trial, where a Cobb County jury found him guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Following the conviction, a Superior Court Judge sentenced Parker to life in prison plus an additional five years.
