In a tragic turn of events that began with a dispute over a parking incident, Larry Jones, a 38-year-old man from Atlanta, was shot in the back on the evening of March 26, 2019. The altercation occurred at an apartment complex on Vanira Avenue in southeast Atlanta. Jones, who was also known as 'Lil' Larry,' had reportedly cautioned a man who was backing up a Dodge pickup truck about getting too close to his vehicle.
This verbal exchange escalated, leading to the man firing a gun multiple times into Jones' car. One of the bullets pierced the trunk and the driver's seat, striking Jones.
Following the shooting, Jones was rushed to Grady Hospital in serious condition. The gunshot wound left him confined to a wheelchair. For more than a year and a half, he lived with the severe injuries he sustained that day. However, on November 28, 2020, at the age of 40, Larry Jones succumbed to the complications from the 2019 shooting. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's office subsequently ruled his death a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting eventually led Atlanta Police to identify a suspect. On January 10, 2021, investigators secured an arrest warrant for 43-year-old Lorenzo Harris for the murder of Mr. Jones. At the time the warrant was served, Harris was already in custody at the Fulton County Jail on unrelated charges. In August 2021, a Fulton County grand jury indicted Harris on multiple charges, including murder, felony murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and by a convicted felon. Harris pleaded not guilty to the charges later that month. Legal proceedings in the case have included appeals regarding the evidence to be presented at trial.
