In the early morning hours of a Friday in March 2019, the life of 19-year-old Omarian Banks was tragically cut short in what was a simple case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Banks, a young Black man and aspiring musician who had just moved to The Retreat apartment complex on Fairburn Road in Atlanta, was returning home in a Lyft. The driver dropped him off at the wrong breezeway, a small mistake that would have fatal consequences.
Unfamiliar with his new surroundings,
Banks went to what he believed was his apartment and knocked on the door. He was on a FaceTime call with his girlfriend at the time, who was waiting for him inside their actual apartment. When she opened her door and didn't see him, she became concerned. Shortly after, the sound of a gunshot echoed through the complex. Banks, realizing his mistake, tried to apologize and retreat. His girlfriend heard him yell, 'I'm sorry, bro. I'm at the wrong house.'
The man inside the apartment, 32-year-old Darryl Bynes, did not accept the apology. Instead, he emerged onto his balcony with a gun. Following a brief and heated exchange, Bynes opened fire on the unarmed teenager as he was attempting to leave. Banks was struck in the neck. His girlfriend ran downstairs to find him lying in the grass, bleeding. Despite the immediate pleas for help, Banks succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Bynes was arrested and charged with murder. He initially claimed self-defense, telling investigators that he believed Banks was trying to break into his home. However, the evidence and witness testimony painted a different picture, one of a young man who made an innocent mistake and was met with lethal force. In July 2023, a Fulton County jury found Darryl Bynes guilty on all counts, including murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison, with an additional 15 years for other charges related to the incident, bringing a measure of justice to the family of Omarian Banks.
