In the summer of 2019, a promising young life was tragically cut short in Augusta, Georgia. Jahlil Brickhouse, a 20-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on July 24, 2019, at the Glenwood Apartments. Another young man, 19-year-old Malik Harvey, was also killed in the incident. Friends and family remembered Brickhouse as a bright and well-loved individual who stayed out of trouble. The shooting, which occurred around 11 p.m., sent shockwaves through the community. Both victims were rushed to Augusta University Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.
The investigation into the double homicide revealed a grim story of a robbery that turned deadly. Authorities determined that the shooting was the result of a planned robbery orchestrated by Day'Shon Kimble, a 25-year-old from Augusta. According to the Augusta District Attorney's Office, Kimble had lured Brickhouse to the apartment complex under the guise of buying marijuana. When Brickhouse realized he was being robbed, he resisted and was shot twice in the back.
The wheels of justice began to turn as the Richmond County Sheriff's Office identified and apprehended the individuals responsible. Day'Shon Kimble was arrested and subsequently convicted of felony murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was sentenced to life in prison with an additional five years. Another suspect, 29-year-old Ryan Taylor, was also arrested and charged with two counts of murder and weapon possession in connection with the deaths of both Jahlil Brickhouse and Malik Harvey. The community mourned the loss of the two young men through candlelight vigils and balloon releases, a somber testament to the impact of their untimely deaths.
