In the quiet community of Stone Mountain, Georgia, a domestic dispute on a late Friday afternoon in July of 2019 escalated into a fatal tragedy. On July 26, 25-year-old Frederick White was shot and killed inside his own home located in the 4200 block of Rue Antoinette Road. The incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m., shattering the peace of the neighborhood and leaving a family torn apart by violence.
Responding to the scene, DeKalb County police discovered White's body, and their
investigation quickly pointed to a prime suspect who was intimately known to the victim. Homicide detectives identified 54-year-old Demeriex Bowman, White's stepfather, as the alleged gunman. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Bowman fled the scene in a rental car, a white 2018 Nissan Altima, prompting police to issue an alert to the public, cautioning that he was to be considered armed and dangerous.
The search for Bowman was short-lived, as authorities were able to locate and apprehend him by that Sunday. Following his capture, Demeriex Bowman was taken into custody and transported to the DeKalb County Jail. He was subsequently charged with the murder of his stepson, Frederick White. Details regarding the motive that led to the deadly confrontation have not been widely publicized, leaving the community to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a young man in a place he should have been safe. A memorial service for Frederick White was held the following week at the Shy Temple CME Church in Decatur.
