In the late summer of 2019, the life of 26-year-old Wydeldric 'Mel' Denson was tragically cut short in what authorities believe was a burglary that took a fatal turn. On the evening of August 9th, Denson was inside his apartment located on the 1900 block of Karen Circle in Milledgeville, Georgia, when he was shot once in the abdomen. Emergency services were called to the scene, and Denson, an employee at a local industrial plant, was rushed to Navicent Health Baldwin hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
The investigation into the shooting led Milledgeville police to identify and arrest three men in connection with the crime. Xavier Rashad Chambers was identified as the individual who allegedly shot Denson. Alongside him, Tremonte Boyer and Durrell Malik Roberson were also taken into custody. Investigators believed Boyer and Roberson were with Chambers at the time of the fatal incident. Roberson was noted as a former detention officer with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.
Following the arrests, the legal process began to unfold. A Baldwin County grand jury handed down a four-count indictment against Xavier Rashad Chambers, charging him with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Tremonte Boyer and Durrell Malik Roberson both faced charges of being a party to the crime of murder for their alleged involvement in the events that led to Denson's death. The cases against Boyer and Roberson were not presented to the grand jury at the same time as Chambers'. The community was left to grapple with the violent loss of a young man, as the accused awaited their days in court.
