In the late summer of 2019, the life of Dorian Whittington, a 42-year-old African American man, was violently cut short on a street in Atlanta, Georgia. On the evening of August 30th, Whittington was on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive when he was ambushed by three unidentified men. The attack was sudden and brutal, with one of the assailants pulling out a firearm and shooting Whittington multiple times.
The violence did not end with the gunshots.
As Whittington lay wounded on the ground, his attackers proceeded to stomp on him before fleeing the scene. Witnesses in the area were left horrified by the callousness of the assault. Emergency services were called, and first responders found Whittington with several gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
Originally from Toledo, Ohio, Whittington's family had to make the painful arrangements to have his body transported back to his home state for funeral services. A GoFundMe page was created to help with the associated costs. In the wake of the murder, the Atlanta Police Department opened an investigation and appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the three suspects.
Despite the public pleas for assistance and the ongoing investigation, no arrests have been made in the case. The individuals responsible for Dorian Whittington's death remain at large. The Atlanta Police Department continues to seek information, and the case remains an unsolved homicide, leaving a family and a community waiting for justice.
