In the summer of 2020, a young father's life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence at a gas station in Mableton, Georgia. The life of 26-year-old Gregory Gabriel, a male, was brought to an abrupt and violent end on the evening of June 17. The incident unfolded at approximately 9:46 p.m. at the Texaco located at 6430 Mableton Parkway. Cobb County Police officers responded to the scene to find Gabriel suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to Wellstar Cobb Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that the assailant had fired into Gabriel's vehicle before fleeing the scene. In the days that followed, law enforcement officials worked diligently to identify a suspect. Their efforts led them to David Nesbit Jr. of Douglasville, who was identified as the alleged shooter the day after the incident. A search for Nesbit ensued, and with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service, he was tracked to an apartment in Austell on June 30. After a standoff where Nesbit initially refused to surrender, he was taken into custody without further incident.
Following his arrest, Nesbit was charged with murder and two counts of aggravated assault. The case proceeded through the legal system, and Nesbit was ultimately convicted for the murder of Gregory Gabriel. He received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, reports from September 2023 indicated that Nesbit was seeking to have his conviction overturned, with his attorney citing strong legal grounds for a potential reversal. At the time of his death, Gabriel was a new father to an 8-month-old daughter and was planning to get engaged. He was a 2012 graduate of Stone Mountain High School and was remembered as a fan of basketball and football.
