In the early morning hours of June 21, 2020, a young man's life was tragically cut short in Augusta, Georgia. Ahmad Popal, a 23-year-old male, was shot and killed in the 1200 block of Broad Street, just outside The Scene nightclub. The incident followed an earlier altercation, the specifics of which remain publicly undisclosed. The man identified as the suspect, 24-year-old Terrence Cumber, was quickly apprehended by law enforcement.
The legal proceedings that followed the death of Ahmad
Popal drew significant community attention and controversy. Cumber was charged with murder and possession of a firearm during a felony. However, a decision by Superior Court Judge Daniel Craig to set a low bond of $4,000 for the murder charge sparked outrage. The District Attorney's Office had recommended that bond be denied, and the judge's ruling was publicly condemned by civil rights organizations, including the Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations who argued it was an affront to justice and the memory of Ahmad Popal.
Despite the initial controversy surrounding his release on bond, the pursuit of justice for Ahmad Popal continued. The case against Terrence Cumber eventually went to trial. In April 2025, a jury found Cumber guilty of the 2020 killing of Ahmad Popal. Following the verdict, it was announced that he would face a sentence of life in prison for his role in the fatal downtown Augusta shooting.
