In the late summer of 2020, the life of 18-year-old Caleb Walker Thompson of Sylvester, Georgia, was tragically cut short. On September 3, 2020, the young man, a recent graduate of Tift County High School, was found inside his car in the parking lot of Dougherty Comprehensive High School in Albany. He had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. At the time, Caleb was working on the school campus as an electrician apprentice for Metro Power, embarking on a promising career.
The initial investigation into the death of the White / Caucasian male involved both the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement. Despite their efforts and the full cooperation of the school district, which provided video footage and other evidence, the case remained without a suspect or a clear motive for several months. The community was left seeking answers for the untimely death of a young man known for his love of sports, particularly football and basketball, and his membership at Praise Temple Church of God in Sumner.
A significant breakthrough in the investigation came in February 2021. Ballistic analysis connected the firearm used in Caleb's murder to another violent crime. This crucial piece of evidence led authorities to 24-year-old Telvin Williams. Williams was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Caleb Thompson. Reports indicated that Williams had also been implicated in another crime where he allegedly forced his way into an apartment.
The arrest of a suspect brought a measure of relief to Caleb's grieving family and the wider community. Throughout the ordeal, friends and family remembered Caleb as a kind and hardworking individual with a bright future.
