The incident, which unfolded on April 13, 2016, at the Nottingham North Apartments, claimed the life of 56-year-old Herbert Garner Mitchell, a male U.S. Army veteran who had served his country for thirty-five years before retiring and returning to the United States from Germany in 2006.
Reports from that day indicate that a heated altercation broke out between Mitchell and 35-year-old Bryan Collier. The argument escalated quickly and violently, with both men reportedly drawing firearms and shooting at each other in close proximity. When the Albany Police Department responded to the scene at 2401 Nottingham Way, they found Mitchell deceased and Collier critically wounded with multiple gunshot wounds.
Collier was immediately transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for emergency medical treatment. For two days, he clung to life, his condition remaining critical. However, on Friday, April 15, 2016, Bryan Collier succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
