In the summer of 2019, a dispute over a small amount of money tragically escalated, leading to the death of 38-year-old Zenas Lee Davis in Albany, Georgia. A Black male, Davis was shot and killed on August 21, 2019, following a disagreement with his employer. The incident, which was captured on video, unfolded inside the Riverfront Resource Center building in downtown Albany, forever altering the lives of two families.
The conflict began earlier that day after Davis, an employee of Jazzy Movers, and the company's owner, 27-year-old Jazzy Jarrell Huff, returned from a job. An argument erupted over what was reportedly $20 in wages that Davis believed he was owed. The verbal confrontation continued for about 30 minutes inside Huff's office. The situation took a fatal turn when Huff fired a handgun seven times, striking Davis multiple times in the torso and leg. Authorities were called to the scene around 1:10 p.m., and Davis was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Law enforcement responded quickly, and Huff was taken into custody at the scene. He was subsequently charged in connection with the shooting. Though Huff did not deny shooting Davis, his defense attorney argued that the act was one of self-defense. The case proceeded to a jury trial in March 2020. After deliberating for approximately two and a half hours, the jury acquitted Huff of malice murder but found him guilty of felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Following the verdict, Jazzy Huff was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for the felony murder conviction, with an additional five years of probation for the firearm charge to be served consecutively. An appeal was later filed, contending that the evidence was insufficient to support the convictions and citing other alleged errors during the trial. However, the Georgia Supreme Court found no reversible errors and affirmed the convictions in February 2023, solidifying the outcome of the legal proceedings and closing a painful chapter for the family of Zenas Lee Davis.
