In the early morning hours of September 6, 2020, a birthday party in Sparta, Georgia, turned into a scene of violence, resulting in the death of 33-year-old Sabreal Metae Taylor, a Black / African American male. The celebration, attended by a large crowd, was shattered around 2 a.m. by the sound of at least 20 gunshots. When the chaos subsided, Taylor was found deceased at the scene, having been shot in the head and shoulder. Six other individuals were also wounded in the shooting.
Sabreal, affectionately known as "Twin," was at the party with his twin brother, Sebreal. Sebreal recounted that everything seemed fine until the shots rang out, causing widespread panic and forcing attendees to run for cover. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to lead the inquiry into the shooting. Taylor's body was subsequently taken to the GBI crime lab for an autopsy.
In the days following the shooting, the GBI made several arrests in connection with the incident. Shimu Arkevious Donte Bryant, 22, and a 15-year-old juvenile were both charged with aggravated assault. Two women, Tiffany Barfield, 31, and Tiare El Chambers, 31, were also arrested and charged with making false statements to investigators. The investigation into the shooting that cut short the life of Sabreal Taylor and injured six others remains ongoing.
