In the early morning hours of September 7, 2020, the life of 21-year-old Lawrence Franklin, a male resident of Valdosta, Georgia, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded in the parking lot of Andy's Wings and Things, a restaurant located on West Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. Numerous people were present at the time of the shooting, which occurred at approximately 3:24 a.m.
Valdosta Police Department patrol officers were dispatched to the scene following a 911 call about a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Lawrence Franklin with a gunshot wound to his torso and immediately began to render first aid. Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived shortly after and transported him to South Georgia Medical Center. Despite the efforts to save him, Franklin was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. His body was then sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations Medical Examiner's Office in Atlanta for an autopsy.
The Valdosta Police Department's Person's Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Personnel from the Valdosta Lowndes Regional Crime Laboratory launched an investigation into the homicide. Authorities appealed to the public for assistance, urging any witnesses who had been in the parking lot at the time of the shooting to come forward with any information or video footage that could aid the investigation. Many of the individuals present had left the scene as police were arriving and attending to the victim.
After a thorough investigation, detectives with the Valdosta Police Department identified a suspect. On Friday, October 23, 2020, arrest warrants were obtained for Raynard Reid on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault. A be-on-the-lookout was issued to local law enforcement agencies for his apprehension. On Monday, October 26, 2020, deputies with the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office located Reid at his residence in Lowndes County and took him into custody without incident. Authorities indicated at the time that the investigation was ongoing and that further charges could be pending.
