On a tragic day in Lithonia, Georgia, the life of 23-year-old Donnell Roderick Smith II was cut short. On September 22, 2020, Smith was fatally shot in a vehicle, an event that would lead to a fiery crash and a double homicide investigation. Another man, Christopher John Mackie Knight Jr., also 23, lost his life in the same violent encounter.
The incident unfolded on Browns Mill Lake Road, where Smith and Knight were passengers in a car. From the back seat, a gunman opened fire, striking both men in the back of the head. The driver was killed at the scene, while the other passenger succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. Following the shooting, the vehicle careened out of control, striking a mailbox and a fire hydrant before crashing into a tree and erupting in flames.
In the chaotic aftermath, two suspects were seen fleeing the scene. Witnesses reported that the men returned to the burning vehicle to retrieve a weapon before disappearing. The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office quickly launched an investigation, which led to the identification and arrest of two suspects.
Twenty-year-old Da Shjohn Bridges of Stockbridge and another individual, Davontavious Smith of Lithonia, were taken into custody. Both men were charged with two counts of felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the deaths of Donnell Smith and Christopher Knight. While arrests have been made, the motive for the deadly shooting has not been publicly released by authorities. Both suspects were booked into the DeKalb County Jail and held without bond.
