In the fall of 2020, the life of 41-year-old Frank Davis Jr., a male resident of Statesboro, Georgia, was tragically cut short. On the evening of November 9th, officers from the Statesboro Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Dunlap Street following a report of a shooting. Inside, they discovered Davis, who had succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.
The incident marked the city's eighth homicide of the year.
Investigators at the scene uncovered evidence of drug sales within the home, leading them to believe that the motive for the fatal shooting was a robbery. Their investigation quickly pointed to a primary suspect: 19-year-old Kaeshawn Malik Hodges. Believing Hodges was the shooter and considering him to be armed and dangerous, the police department, with assistance from the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force, began a search for him, and also noted that another individual may have been involved.
A few days later, on the morning of November 13, 2020, Kaeshawn Malik Hodges turned himself into the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office. He was subsequently charged with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. In February of 2021, a grand jury indicted Hodges on these charges. The legal proceedings took an unusual turn in August 2022 when it was revealed in court that a key witness for the prosecution had been deceased since November of the previous year, a fact the district attorney's office had only recently discovered. This development led to Hodges being granted bond.
