In a quiet Lawrenceville, Georgia neighborhood, the afternoon of November 21, 2020, was shattered by violence that claimed the life of 64-year-old Robert Caverly and two other men. Gwinnett County police were called to a home on Creek Water Court shortly before 3:30 p.m. for a report of a person shot. Upon arrival, they discovered a man in the cul-de-sac with at least one gunshot wound.
This man, later identified as 45-year-old Eugene McClam, was a resident of the home and was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Officers noticed the garage door of a nearby home was open and, upon searching the residence, found the bodies of two more men. Inside, they located Robert Caverly and 33-year-old Steven Finch, both of whom were deceased. The investigation into the triple homicide quickly pointed to one suspect, 21-year-old Justice R. Lusk of Stone Mountain. Lusk was apprehended late that same night near the scene of the crime.
Investigators learned that Lusk had taken an Uber to the residence on Creek Water Court with the intention of robbing the occupants of drugs. After the shootings, Lusk fled the scene with a bookbag and a blanket. He attempted to get a ride from a Lyft driver, but when the driver refused, Lusk ran into a wooded area. He later stashed the bookbag, which contained an AK-47 assault rifle, a handgun, muddied clothing, and a large quantity of methamphetamine and marijuana, in the crawl space of a nearby home.
Justice R. Lusk was charged with three counts of Felony Murder, three counts of Aggravated Assault, and three counts of Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony. During his trial, Lusk claimed he acted in self-defense, a claim the jury rejected. In October 2024, a Gwinnett County jury found Lusk guilty of three counts of malice murder, three counts of felony murder, three counts of aggravated assault, and three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was subsequently sentenced to three consecutive life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional five years.
