In the winter of 2022, the tight-knit legal community of Lawrenceville, Georgia, was shaken by the violent death of one of its own. Douglas W. Lewis, a 55-year-old male attorney, was found deceased inside his burning law office on Stone Mountain Street on the evening of December 7th. Emergency crews, initially responding to a fire, made the grim discovery of Lewis's body, revealing a tragedy that went beyond the flames.
It was soon determined that he had been shot multiple times before the fire was intentionally set.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect who was apprehended near the scene. Allen Tayeh, 65, was taken into custody by Lawrenceville police. At the time of his arrest, Tayeh had burn injuries, and was in possession of a revolver with spent cartridges. Authorities also found gasoline cans in the vicinity of the burned law office. The evidence began to paint a clear and disturbing picture of the events that had transpired.
Motive for the brutal slaying became apparent as investigators delved into Tayeh's background and his connection to the victim. Lewis had been representing Tayeh's ex-wife in their contentious divorce proceedings. Court records revealed a financial dispute, indicating that Tayeh had been ordered to pay nearly $30,000 in his ex-wife's legal fees directly to Lewis. A hearing regarding Tayeh's failure to make this payment was scheduled for the week after the murder.
In the face of overwhelming evidence, Allen Tayeh was charged with malice murder and first-degree arson. The legal proceedings that followed brought some measure of closure to the community and Lewis's grieving family. Tayeh ultimately pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. In June 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Douglas W. Lewis and the arson of his law office, ensuring he would be held accountable for the devastating loss he inflicted.
