In the early hours of July 3, 2024, the quiet of a Lawrenceville, Georgia, townhome community was broken by a grim discovery. The body of 40-year-old Guadalupe Garcia Rodriguez, a husband and father of two, was found inside his own truck at the entrance of the neighborhood on Paden Cove Trail. His wife, Rosa Quintanilla, had reported him missing on July 1, growing worried when the man who worked for a tree-cutting company never returned home.
The Gwinnett County Police Department
immediately launched a homicide investigation. For weeks, the case yielded few public answers, leaving a family to grapple with their sudden and violent loss. Investigators released surveillance footage of a person of interest, described as a Hispanic male in his 20s or 30s with a slim build, who was seen walking away from the area where the truck was found. The breakthrough in the case came when detectives learned of a dispute between Rodriguez and the father of an ex-girlfriend over land in Mexico.
This new information led investigators to interview the ex-girlfriend, which ultimately pointed them to a suspect: 38-year-old Mario Rene Lopez-Jolon. Working with law enforcement in Alabama, Gwinnett County detectives located and arrested Lopez-Jolon at a hotel in Huntsville. He is now facing charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of certain felonies. Lopez-Jolon is awaiting extradition back to Gwinnett County to face the allegations.
