In the late hours of December 26, 2020, 16-year-old Kalecia 'Pinky' Williams, a vibrant and popular content creator from Atlanta, Georgia, was fatally shot at the Hyatt Regency hotel in the city's downtown. Williams, a student at South Atlanta High School, was known for her engaging dance videos on TikTok. Earlier that Christmas night, she had left her home under the impression she would be attending a chaperoned holiday party at an Airbnb.
However, for reasons that remain unclear, the location was changed to the Hyatt Regency, where an adult had reportedly paid for a hotel room for the teenagers.
Just after midnight, Williams was in her hotel room recording a TikTok video. In the footage, she is seen dancing when she is suddenly startled by someone entering the room; the video ends abruptly. Minutes later, between 12:23 a.m. and 12:30 a.m., hotel guests heard a gunshot. Williams was found with a gunshot wound to the groin and was transported from the eighth-floor room to the lobby by two young men. Emergency services were called, but by the time police arrived, she was unresponsive. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her family was not notified of her death until the following day by the morgue.
A 16-year-old male, identified as Kerie Brown, was arrested at the scene. He was initially described as a companion or acquaintance of Williams. An investigation suggested a verbal dispute occurred between them in the hotel room just before the shooting. Brown was charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, reckless conduct, and possession of a pistol by a person under the age of 18. Subsequent reports and an autopsy also indicated that Williams may have been sexually assaulted before her death. Due to his age, Brown was tried as a juvenile and was reportedly sentenced to one year in a juvenile facility before being released. The handling of the case and the short sentence sparked outrage from Williams's family, who have continued to seek further justice.
