In the early morning hours of April 9, 2021, a call to the Greene County 911 Center reported a seemingly routine tractor-trailer accident along Interstate 20. However, when deputies arrived at mile marker 132 in Greensboro, Georgia, they discovered a far more grim reality. Inside the cab of the truck was 30-year-old Joseph Lee Briggs, Jr. of Manning, South Carolina, who was not the victim of a mere traffic collision, but of a violent crime. It was quickly determined that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds that proved to be fatal.
The investigation, soon taken over by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, began to piece together the events that led to the tragic discovery. The preliminary findings suggested that Briggs had been the victim of a road rage incident while driving his truck. The day after the shooting, authorities publicly identified their primary suspect, 20-year-old Deron Demond Bell from Norcross, Georgia, and arrest warrants were issued. What followed was an intensive search for Bell, involving the Greene County Sheriff's Office, the GBI, and the U.S. Marshals Service, as he had immediately fled the area after the incident.
After a manhunt that spanned ten months and led authorities to another state, Deron Bell was located and apprehended in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was extradited back to Georgia to face charges for the death of Joseph Briggs. In November 2022, the case came to a resolution when Bell entered a guilty plea for malice murder. The court sentenced him to life in prison with the possibility of parole for the shooting death of the South Carolina truck driver. The investigation concluded that Bell had fired three shots into the driver's side of Briggs' truck, striking him twice and ending his life in a senseless act of violence on the interstate.
