On the evening of April 25, 2021, in Monticello, Georgia, the life of 41-year-old Kira Syrita Ammons, an African American woman, was tragically cut short. At approximately 8:37 p.m., emergency services received a call from the Academy Village apartment complex on Hillsboro Street. There, Ammons had been shot multiple times. Despite the swift response, her injuries proved fatal.
Witnesses at the scene quickly identified the shooter as 38-year-old James David Mathis of Eatonton. Law enforcement in Jasper County promptly alerted the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, as Mathis resided in their jurisdiction. When Putnam County deputies arrived at Mathis's home, they were met with gunfire; Mathis shot at one of the patrol vehicles before deputies could make contact. Shortly after, Mathis was found outside his residence with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to handle the investigation, which was quickly determined to be a murder-suicide. Both Ammons and Mathis were transported to the GBI Crime Lab for autopsies. The preliminary findings confirmed that Ammons's death was a homicide and Mathis's was a suicide. Investigators believe Mathis acted alone, and no further arrests were made in connection with the case. The incident left the Monticello community in mourning and highlighted the devastating impact of domestic violence.
