In the spring of 2021, a domestic situation in Columbus, Georgia, ended in the death of 38-year-old John Anthony Johnson. On the evening of May 1st, police responded to a call about a person lying in the street and discovered Johnson with a fatal gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation that followed led to the arrest of his wife of one month, Charise Douglas, who was 31 at the time.
Douglas was subsequently charged with murder and the use of a firearm during the commission of a crime in connection with her husband's death. The case brought to light a tumultuous relationship, with conflicting narratives of the events that transpired on that fatal day.
During legal proceedings, Douglas's defense attorney argued that she was a victim of domestic violence and had acted in self-defense. The defense claimed that on the day of the shooting, Johnson had been physically abusing Douglas and had nearly choked her to death. According to her attorney, Douglas was attempting to leave their home with her 6-year-old son when the altercation escalated. It was then, her attorney stated, that she retrieved a handgun from her purse and shot Johnson to protect herself and her child.
Supporters of Douglas, including her sisters and other survivors of abuse, attended her court hearings to advocate for her, portraying her as a sweet person who was not the aggressor. They hoped to bring attention to the issue of domestic violence and to support a woman they believed had been forced to defend herself.
Despite the claims of self-defense and the support from her family and advocates, the legal process moved forward. Ultimately, Charise Douglas was found guilty on all charges related to the death of her husband. She was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the shooting of John Anthony Johnson.
