In the early morning hours of Friday, May 28, 2021, the city of Valdosta, Georgia, was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the lives of two young men. Sherrod Gore, a 23-year-old male, and Jamar Antwan Walton, 21, were fatally shot in the parking area of CBC Bank, situated across from Lucky's Bar in the neighboring city of Remerton. The incident, which unfolded at approximately 1:45 a.m., prompted an immediate investigation by the Remerton Police Department, who soon requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
As the investigation progressed, a suspect was identified. Just over a week later, on Friday, June 4, 2021, a breakthrough in the case occurred during a routine traffic stop on I-75 northbound in Cook County. Deputies with the Cook County Sheriff's Office pulled over a white Nissan Altima for speeding. The driver was identified as 19-year-old Shaniya Brooks of Valdosta, and her passenger was 20-year-old Ronald Welsh, also of Valdosta. Welsh was subsequently arrested in connection with the double homicide.
Following his arrest, Ronald Welsh was charged with two counts of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was to be returned to Lowndes County to be booked on these charges. Shaniya Brooks was also taken into custody and charged with hindering the apprehension of a fugitive. The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the GBI, the Remerton Police Department, the Valdosta Police Department Crime Scene Unit, the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Cook County Sheriff's Office.
