In the summer of 2021, tragedy struck in Atlanta's Vine City neighborhood, claiming the life of 28-year-old Markeece V. Jenkins, a male from Orlando, Florida. On the evening of August 30th, gunshots shattered the peace in the 600 block of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard, near Rodney Cook Sr. Park. When Atlanta police officers arrived at the scene around 6:45 p.m., they discovered Jenkins suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was immediately transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that two individuals had approached Jenkins before the fatal shots were fired. Homicide detectives were able to utilize surveillance footage from multiple angles to piece together the events of that evening. This evidence became crucial in identifying those believed to be responsible for Jenkins' death. The case was highlighted as the 109th homicide in Atlanta for that year, a grim statistic that surpassed the pace of the previous year. In an effort to generate leads from the public, the police department offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information that could lead to an arrest.
As the investigation progressed, authorities identified two suspects in connection with the fatal shooting. One of the individuals was a teenager whose name was not publicly released due to his age. He was later apprehended after being found in a stolen vehicle and was subsequently charged with aggravated assault and simple battery related to the homicide. The second suspect was identified as David McKinnon. While police have secured warrants for his arrest and have publicly released a surveillance photograph of him, his current whereabouts remain unknown, and he is still considered at large.
