Paulette Smith returned home from work at approximately 6:00 p.m. to the Laurel Pointe Apartments in Forest Park, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. She discovered her 22-year-old son, Johnathan McWilliams, unresponsive in his bedroom, having been shot multiple times. The back door of their apartment was wide open, an unsettling detail in the unfolding tragedy. Clayton County police officers responded to the scene in the 200 block of Morrow Road, where McWilliams was officially declared dead.
Johnathan, a young father, left behind a daughter who was just a year and a half old at the time of his death, and a son. His family described him as a quiet person who kept to himself and didn't have any known enemies, leaving them baffled and searching for a reason for the violent end to his life. They were plunged into a state of shock and profound grief, unable to comprehend who would have wanted to harm him. The loss was especially poignant for his young daughter, who, as she grew older, would ask her grandmother why she couldn't FaceTime her daddy.
In the months and years that followed, the investigation into Johnathan McWilliams's murder continued, but answers remained elusive. His family, desperate for justice, took it upon themselves to keep his memory alive and the case in the public eye. His mother and aunt spent countless hours knocking on the doors of former neighbors and handing out flyers, hoping to jog someone's memory or prick someone's conscience. The Clayton County Police Department did receive a tip that led them to interview a new person of interest, briefly igniting a glimmer of hope for the family. However, this interview did not result in an arrest, and the search for Johnathan's killer continues. A $2,000 reward through Crime Stoppers is being offered for any information that leads to the individual or individuals responsible for his death.
