In November of 2023, the life of 34-year-old Frederick Ricardo Nelson Jr., a male from Sumter, South Carolina, was tragically cut short in a violent act that would remain hidden for twelve days. His body was discovered by a group of hunters in a wooded area off Cimmaron Road near the communities of Rembert and Pisgah. The hunters were drawn to the location by a foul odor, leading them to a grim finding: Nelson's remains wrapped in bed sheets, a comforter, and a red tarp.
An autopsy later confirmed that he had died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into Nelson's death led authorities to 22-year-old Daejon Rashad Jackson, also of Sumter. According to arrest warrants, it is alleged that on or around November 14, 2023, Jackson shot Nelson approximately twelve times. Following the shooting, Jackson is accused of moving Nelson's body to the remote wooded area where it was later found. Evidence gathered from a residence, recorded statements, telephone records, and the autopsy report all contributed to the charges brought against Jackson.
Daejon Rashad Jackson was subsequently arrested and is facing multiple charges, including murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. In a separate matter stemming from the investigation into Nelson's death, Jackson was also charged with trafficking fentanyl. This charge arose after investigators discovered a quantity of the illicit substance at his residence. The case against Jackson is set to be prosecuted by the Third Circuit Solicitor's Office.
