Walter Christopher, a 39-year-old Black man from Columbus, Georgia, was killed on December 7, 2021, after a shooting outside the MK Mart on Farr Road. The violence unfolded that night at the convenience store in the 1100 block of Farr Road, where he was shot and then rushed to the hospital. He did not survive. In the days and years that followed, his name remained on the Columbus Police Department’s list of unsolved homicides, a stark sign that the case had lingered without closure long after
the gunfire stopped.
For a long time, the case appeared to sit in that painful space between public memory and official uncertainty. Then, nearly four years later, investigators said the case had finally moved. According to reports on the arrest, Columbus police secured warrants on September 25, 2025, after what was described as a near four-year investigation. The suspect was identified as Jy’Keiveous Jiles, who was 21 at the time police announced the case. He was later arrested on November 16, 2025, by the Columbus Police Department’s Special Operations Unit.
The charges filed against Jiles were serious and revealing: murder, criminal attempt to commit hijacking a motor vehicle, and theft by receiving a motor vehicle. Those accusations gave the public its clearest picture yet of what detectives believed had happened around Walter Christopher’s final moments, pointing to a deadly encounter that investigators tied to a vehicle-related crime. After the arrest, police said Jiles was scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Recorder’s Court on November 19, 2025.
