A promising young British astrophysicist, Dr. Matthew Willson, 31, was visiting his girlfriend in a suburban Atlanta apartment complex when his life was tragically cut short. On January 16, 2022, while lying in bed with his partner, a stray bullet pierced the wall of the apartment and struck him in the head. The couple had been awakened by the sound of more than 30 gunshots being fired from a nearby apartment complex.
His girlfriend, Katherine Shepard, immediately called for help, but Willson's injuries were fatal.
The random act of violence that ended Willson's life stemmed from the reckless discharge of firearms by individuals in an adjacent apartment building. Investigators from the Brookhaven Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the senseless shooting. Their efforts led them to identify a suspect, 24-year-old Demarcus D. Chaney, as the individual allegedly responsible for firing the fatal shot. Evidence suggested that Chaney had been recklessly shooting a gun from a neighboring apartment complex, and one of the bullets traveled into the building where Willson was staying.
Following an investigation, Demarcus Chaney was arrested and faced multiple charges in connection with the death of Matthew Willson, including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Chaney was subsequently indicted by a grand jury and awaited trial for his alleged role in the tragic and untimely death of the visiting British scientist. The case highlighted the devastating consequences of random gun violence and the profound loss of a life full of promise.
