In the late afternoon of March 10, 2022, a dispute in a park at the intersection of Lindsey and Polk streets in Lagrange, Georgia, turned deadly, claiming the life of 16-year-old Nydarrian Deondre Laye. The male teenager found himself in a violent confrontation with 18-year-old Lasabyan Harden during what authorities believe was a drug deal gone wrong. The exchange escalated into a shootout between the two.
During the gunfight, Harden allegedly shot Laye in the chest.
Despite being critically wounded, Laye managed to return fire, striking Harden in the leg. When police arrived at the chaotic scene, they discovered a good Samaritan attempting to administer CPR to the fallen teenager. Laye was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Harden transported himself to the hospital to receive treatment for the gunshot wound to his leg. Following an investigation into the incident, law enforcement officials arrested Harden. He was subsequently charged with felony murder in connection with the death of Nydarrian Deondre Laye.
