In the late hours of March 17, 2022, a dispute over a bowling ball at the Metro Fun Center in southwest Atlanta escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 31-year-old Lakevia Jackson. A female, Jackson was at the entertainment venue celebrating a friend's birthday when the argument erupted. The conflict, which began inside the bowling alley, spilled out into the parking lot.
The verbal altercation turned violent when firearms were introduced.
Jackson was shot multiple times and died from her injuries at the scene. Initially, the incident was investigated as a homicide, and the Atlanta Police Department worked to identify those involved.
Two individuals, Joshua Fleetwood and Imani Spears, were arrested in connection with Jackson's death. Fleetwood was charged with felony murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Spears also faced charges related to the incident. The case, however, took a significant turn during legal proceedings.
In November 2023, the charges against both Fleetwood and Spears were dismissed. A Fulton County Superior Court Judge ruled that the two acted in self-defense. Evidence presented, including witness testimony and video footage, indicated that Jackson was the first to brandish and fire a weapon. The judge concluded that Fleetwood and Spears were legally justified in their actions, leading to the dismissal of all charges against them. At the time of the incident, there was speculation in the community that the shooting might have been related to a gang rivalry, but the court's decision was ultimately based on the grounds of self-defense.
