On the evening of March 31, 2022, 28-year-old Elijah Rasheed was shot and killed in Macon, Georgia. He was in a car with two friends, leaving a Family Dollar on Napier Avenue after buying a bag of ice to celebrate a promotion one of them had received. As they were driving away, a man who had been staring at them in the parking lot fired a single shot into their vehicle. The bullet penetrated the trunk and the backseat, striking Rasheed. His friends rushed him to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries while being transported to a trauma center.

Investigators believe Rasheed and his friends were targeted because they were members of the LGBTQ+ community. The man who shot Rasheed, Brian Marquel Greene, did not know the victims and no words were exchanged before the unprovoked attack. Within a week of the shooting, police used surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts to identify and arrest Greene. In his apartment, they found the 9mm pistol used in the shooting.

The investigation revealed that Greene was also responsible for the murder of another man, Glenn Eugene Stevens, just eight days prior to Rasheed's death. In October 2024, after a four-day trial, a jury found Brian Greene guilty of two counts of murder, as well as aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was subsequently sentenced to two life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus an additional five years. Prosecutors described Greene as a 'spree killer.'
