In the early morning hours of May 6, 2022, the life of 19-year-old Chyrek Lowe was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire at a southwest Atlanta apartment complex. Lowe, a young male, was at the Ashley Cascade apartments on Kimberly Way when he was struck by multiple bullets. In a desperate bid for help, he was placed in the back of a white Chevrolet Malibu and driven three miles to Atlanta Fire Rescue Station 31 on Fairburn Road.
Upon arrival at the fire station, firefighters
attempted to render first aid to the grievously wounded teenager. Despite their efforts, Chyrek Lowe was pronounced dead at the scene, his life ending in the back of the car that had been his potential rescue. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office later officially identified him as the victim.
Atlanta police were dispatched to both the apartment complex and the fire station, treating them as two separate crime scenes. Homicide investigators recovered ballistic and electronic evidence from both locations and began speaking with individuals who were able to provide some context to the events leading up to the fatal shooting. Some of the other occupants of the Malibu remained at the fire station to cooperate with the police.
As news of the tragedy spread, grieving family members, including a man who identified himself as Lowe's twin brother, gathered at the fire station, their sorrow palpable as they sought to understand the violent loss of a young life. In the immediate aftermath, Atlanta police had not publicly identified any suspects in the shooting.
