In the late hours of July 17, 2022, the life of 21-year-old Jason Stephen Escoffrey was tragically cut short. A native of Rockdale County, Georgia, the young man was discovered near the swimming pool of the Highlands of West Village apartment complex in Smyrna, Georgia, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 11:15 p.m., and Escoffrey was rushed to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. At the time of his death, Escoffrey was living in Opelika, Alabama.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify 20-year-old Tavis Lavon Crankfield of Decatur as the primary suspect. For four months, Crankfield remained at large, prompting a manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies. Investigators relied on witness statements and tips from Crime Stoppers to build their case against him. In September 2022, a grand jury indicted Crankfield on a slew of charges, including malice murder, two counts of felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The indictment stated that Crankfield 'did unlawfully, with malice aforethought, cause the death of Jason Escoffrey, a human being, by shooting him with a firearm.'
The search for Crankfield concluded on November 16, 2022, when he was apprehended by the Cobb County Police Department's Violent Crime Bureau. Following a brief foot chase near Powers Ferry and Delk roads, Crankfield was taken into custody and booked into the Cobb County jail, where he was held without bond. While an arrest has been made and charges have been filed, a motive for the shooting has not been publicly released by authorities.
