In the early hours of a Wednesday morning in Augusta, Georgia, the life of 16-year-old Kaymaya Greene was tragically cut short. On July 27, 2022, at the Economy Inn on Deans Bridge Road, a heated argument in the parking lot escalated to a fatal conclusion. Kaymaya, a young African American female, was in the company of two males when an altercation broke out with one of them, identified as 19-year-old Demarcus Clark.
The dispute reportedly intensified, leading to Kaymaya spitting at and
throwing a drink on Clark. In response, Clark is said to have pulled out a gun and shot her. Richmond County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the hotel at approximately 6:07 a.m. following reports of a shooting. They discovered Kaymaya with at least one gunshot wound to her leg. She was quickly transported to Augusta University Medical Center for treatment.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Kaymaya Greene succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 6:41 a.m., less than an hour after the shooting. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed. Investigators began a thorough examination of the scene, going door-to-door at the hotel to gather information from any potential witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage to piece together the events that led to the shooting.
Following the investigation, Demarcus Clark of Augusta was taken into custody and charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The other male who was present during the incident was not charged. It was noted in reports that this was not the first time Kaymaya had been the subject of public concern, as she had been reported as a missing person or runaway multiple times in the years leading up to her death.
