On an August evening in 2022, the life of 45-year-old Claudia Dionne Roberts, a mother of five, was tragically cut short in her Lawrenceville, Georgia, apartment. The initial report to the Gwinnett County police on August 2nd came from her estranged husband, Glenroy Roberts, who claimed she had taken her own life with his gun following an argument.
However, the scene that greeted investigators began to tell a different and more violent story.
Upon their arrival at the Bethesda Church Road apartment, officers discovered Claudia Roberts deceased with a gunshot wound to her head. Glenroy Roberts initially told the 911 operator that his wife had grabbed his gun from the closet, and in the struggle to get it from her, it discharged. He later changed his account, telling police he was not in the room when he heard the gunshot and found her in the closet, dead from what he alleged was a self-inflicted wound. However, the evidence did not align with his claims. The medical examiner found that Claudia had sustained more than one gunshot wound, and multiple shell casings were discovered near her body, making suicide an unlikely cause of death. Adding to the chilling scene, the couple's 10-year-old son was present in the apartment at the time of the shooting and reported hearing at least four gunshots.
The investigation swiftly moved from a suspected suicide to a homicide, with Glenroy Roberts as the primary suspect. He was arrested and subsequently charged with felony murder and aggravated assault. According to Claudia's mother, Delores Squires, Glenroy's anger had been stewing because Claudia had recently traveled to New Jersey to celebrate her mother's birthday, a trip he was not pleased about. The family revealed that Claudia had been in a 21-year marriage with Glenroy and had been trying to work on their relationship for the sake of their children, despite a history of domestic violence.
In July 2024, after a trial where prosecutors presented the compelling evidence from the crime scene and the medical examiner's report, a Gwinnett County jury deliberated for approximately two hours before reaching a verdict. Glenroy Roberts, then 53, was found guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional five years, ensuring he would not have the opportunity to harm anyone else. The conviction brought a measure of justice to the family of Claudia Dionne Roberts, who was remembered as a woman with a contagious laugh that could light up a room.
