In the late afternoon of Sunday, August 21, 2022, the sound of gunshots pierced the air on Neese Street in Eastman, Georgia. When Eastman Police Department officers arrived at 6:36 p.m., they found a car that had crashed into a tree. Inside the wrecked vehicle was 21-year-old Za'Quon Brown of Oglethorpe, who was found deceased from a gunshot wound. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was subsequently called to lead the homicide investigation.
Friends and residents of the neighborhood were left in shock by the sudden violence. Brown was remembered as a respectful and good person who worked at Walmart and was a devoted father to his infant son. He was known to be a kindhearted soul who could light up any room with his presence and was deeply loved by his family.
The investigation into Brown's death quickly progressed, and on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, an arrest was made. Andre Lynn Johnson, a 16-year-old from Rhine, was taken into custody and charged with malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault in connection with Brown's shooting.
In a related development, Johnson's mother, 38-year-old Jemel Wilcox, also from Rhine, was arrested and charged with one count of making false statements and writings in relation to the investigation. Authorities announced that further charges and arrests were anticipated as the investigation continued.
