In the quiet town of Thomson, Georgia, Virginia Sue Wilson, a 75-year-old Caucasian female, was a beloved figure known for her warmth and community involvement. Her life, however, came to a tragic and abrupt end on September 7, 2022. On that day, authorities were summoned to her home on Augusta Road, where they discovered her body in a rear bedroom. An autopsy would later confirm that she had died from a gunshot wound.
The initial call to emergency services was made by her husband, James Edgar Wilson III. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a startling and tense situation unfolding in the front yard. James Wilson was on his knees, holding a. 38 caliber pistol to his own chest. After a brief standoff with law enforcement, he surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident. Reportedly, he admitted to the sheriff at the scene, 'I done made a mess, I done killed her.' He also informed the officers that his wife was inside the house.
Following the incident, James Edgar Wilson III was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife, as well as possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist the McDuffie County Sheriff's Office with the investigation. The case proceeded through the legal system, and in August 2025, three years after the death of his wife, James Wilson, then 77 years old, appeared in court.
Taking into account his age and health, a plea deal was reached. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison without the possibility of parole, followed by 20 years of probation. As part of the agreement, he is prohibited from contacting his family unless they initiate the contact. During the sentencing, family members expressed their profound grief and the difficulty of forgiving him for his actions.
