In the late morning of September 18, 2022, a sense of disquiet settled over the 1300 block of Ponderosa Drive in Valdosta, Georgia. The calm was shattered by the sound of gunshots, prompting concerned citizens to reach out to E911. Valdosta Police Officers were dispatched to the scene, where they discovered a 15-year-old male, Jaybrie Hampton, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate first aid rendered by the officers and the swift arrival of Emergency Medical Services, the young man's injuries proved to be too severe. He was transported to South Georgia Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his wounds. Jaybrie was an African American male who attended Valdosta High School and was described by those who knew him as a loving person, full of joy and laughter.
The investigation into the tragic death of Jaybrie Hampton moved quickly. Detectives with the Valdosta Police Department worked diligently, and their efforts led them to identify a suspect. On the same day as the shooting, arrest warrants were obtained for a 16-year-old male juvenile. The following evening, acting on a tip, officers descended on a residence within the city of Valdosta where the suspect was believed to be located. At approximately 11:30 p.m. on September 19, 2022, the 16-year-old was taken into custody without incident.
The teenage suspect was detained at a Regional Youth Detention Center to face a litany of serious charges. These included malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault, all of which are felonies. Further charges included possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a handgun by a person under the age of 18. As the investigation continued, authorities indicated that more charges could be pending. The case sent ripples through the community, with the Valdosta Police Chief expressing condolences to Jaybrie's family and lamenting the senseless act of violence that had so profoundly impacted numerous lives.
