In the midst of his trial on charges of child sexual abuse, 51-year-old Christopher Daron Smith, a former pastor from Columbus, Georgia, took his own life on October 19, 2022. Smith was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound to the head during a recess in the court proceedings. His death brought an abrupt end to a legal battle that had begun years earlier.
The series of events leading to this tragic conclusion started in 2019 when U.S.
Marshals arrived at Smith's home with arrest warrants. This initial encounter escalated into a tense, hours-long standoff with law enforcement, during which Smith barricaded himself inside his residence. He eventually surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody.
At the time of his death, Smith, who had been the pastor of Word of Truth Outreach Ministries, was on trial for a number of serious charges, including two counts of aggravated child molestation, child molestation, and sodomy. The trial was in its final stages when Smith requested a break to retrieve his glasses from his car after the judge denied a motion for a mistrial. When he failed to return, he was found deceased. The discovery of his body led the judge to dismiss the jury, officially concluding the trial.
