In the days leading up to Christmas, a mother's heart was shattered by a senseless act of violence that claimed the life of her 16-year-old son, Justin Rock Powell. The tragic events unfolded on the evening of Saturday, December 17, 2022, at the Retreat at Greenbriar apartment complex in southwest Atlanta, a place Justin called home. A dispute that began on social media escalated into a real-world confrontation, culminating in an exchange of gunfire that would leave two families grieving during
the holiday season.
Justin, along with his 14-year-old best friend, Malik Grover, were fatally wounded in the shootout. Three other young people, an 11-year-old boy, a 15-year-old boy, and a 15-year-old girl, were also injured in the gunfire. According to Atlanta police, one group of teenagers arrived at the apartment complex armed, and another group responded with gunfire. For Justin's parents, Natosha and Erik Hinton, the pain was unbearable as they tried to comprehend how online chatter could lead to the death of their son. They described Justin as a 'normal kid' who enjoyed playing video games and watching TV, not someone involved in street life. His family acknowledged that he had been hanging around the wrong crowd and they had sought help to get him back on the right path, even noting he had been on an ankle monitor for a time.
In the wake of the shooting, the Atlanta Police Department's Homicide Unit began an investigation that led to the identification of a suspect. On December 23, 2022, arrest warrants were issued for 19-year-old Montavius Ferguson. A week later, on December 30, Ferguson turned himself in to the authorities without incident and was subsequently charged with the murder of Justin Powell. While Ferguson's arrest marked a significant development in the case, police did not release information regarding any other potential suspects involved in the deadly shootout. The community was left to mourn the loss of two young lives and grapple with the devastating consequences of youth violence.
