On a tragic afternoon in October 2016, Kenneth Oglesby, a 44-year-old male, was fatally shot during an attempted robbery at a gas station in College Park, Georgia. Oglesby had been a long-time resident of the area and was at a local Chevron on Roosevelt Highway to get gas and something to eat. He was tragically ambushed while preparing to drive to Ohio for his niece's funeral.
The father of a seven-year-old son, Oglesby was the oldest of six siblings.
The incident, captured on surveillance footage, showed a man in a 'Scream' mask pulling up beside Oglesby's vehicle. The armed man, later identified as Brian Duffy, then 27, attempted to rob Oglesby. As Oglesby dropped his phone and raised his hands in the air, backing away from his assailant, Duffy fired a single, fatal shot that struck him in the neck. After the shooting, Duffy attempted to steal Oglesby's BMW SUV but was unable to start the vehicle. He then fled the scene in the car he arrived in. Oglesby stumbled into the gas station's convenience store, where he collapsed and died.
A Fulton County police detective spotted the getaway car approximately six hours later. A police chase ensued, which ended when Duffy crashed the vehicle. He was promptly arrested. At the time of the murder, Duffy was already on probation for a prior armed robbery. The local police chief expressed frustration that the suspect had not been incarcerated for his previous offenses.
In March 2018, a jury found Brian Duffy guilty of a series of charges related to the incident, including murder, attempted armed robbery, and aggravated assault. He was subsequently sentenced for the senseless killing of Kenneth Oglesby.
