In 2022, a 45-year-old man named Jose Luis Moreno, who required the use of a walker due to a disability that caused weakness in his ankles, was in need of a place to stay in Norfolk, Virginia. He found what he thought was a safe haven with a couple he knew from church, 45-year-old Kristie Marie Lynch and 52-year-old James Christian Lynch. They invited him into their home, and he contributed to the household finances with his Supplemental Security Disability Income. However, the arrangement turned into a nightmare for Moreno. The couple began to "punish" him for not helping with household chores and for speaking Spanish. This punishment escalated into severe physical abuse. James Lynch admitted to beating Moreno multiple times with a frying pan in the days leading up to his death. Fearing arrest, they never sought medical attention for his injuries. The abuse culminated in Moreno's death in August 2023. Kristie Lynch allegedly told her husband that Moreno had sexually assaulted her, urging him to "man up" and "go take care of your boy." The couple then subjected Moreno, who was 5-foot-7 and weighed about 130 pounds, to a brutal and fatal assault. They used various household items, including a pan, a dog leash, and a belt, to beat and strangle him. James Lynch claimed Moreno had a "'demon'-like strength" and that he resorted to using a baseball bat to subdue him. After the prolonged and violent attack, Jose Luis Moreno was dead. His body was left at the bottom of the staircase in the couple's apartment. For two days, Moreno's death remained a secret within the walls of the apartment. It was not until August 11, 2023, that the Lynches contacted their pastor and confessed that Moreno was dead inside their home. The pastor instructed them to call the police. When officers arrived, they discovered Moreno's naked body, covered in cuts and bruises, confirming the violent end to his life. The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of both Kristie and James Lynch. James Lynch pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Kristie Lynch was convicted of first-degree murder, with her sentencing scheduled for January 2026. The case revealed a shocking level of cruelty inflicted upon a disabled man who had sought help and shelter from people he knew through his church, only to be met with horrific violence that ultimately cost him his life.
