Natasha Elizabeth Bates, a 40-year-old Black woman, was killed in a midday burst of gunfire in West Baltimore on July 10, 2013—a sudden, public violence that left a neighborhood already on edge feeling even less safe. Police were called just before 12:30 p.m. to the unit block of North Fulton Avenue, near North Baltimore Street, after reports that two people had been shot. Bates and a man were rushed to a hospital, but both died a short time later.
