Henry H. Raley, a 24-year-old white male, was a police officer in Jacksonville, Florida. On November 29, 1900, Officer Raley was tragically shot and killed while attempting to arrest two intoxicated men near Davis Street and Forsyth Street. As he escorted one of the men towards a store to call for a wagon, a group of the man's friends confronted him, demanding the suspect's release. During this confrontation, one of the men in the mob shot Officer Raley.
In the ensuing chaos, the suspect also shot and killed another man and severely wounded another individual who came to Officer Raley's aid.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and sentenced to life in prison. However, shortly after being incarcerated, he managed to escape from a convict road camp and was never seen again.
