Micah Z. Thomas, a 14-year-old from Jacksonville, Florida, was tragically shot and killed on New Year's Day, January 1, 2024. The incident occurred in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood on the city's Northwest side. Neighbors reported hearing gunfire around 6:10 p.m. and found Micah wounded on the threshold of a home located near Castle Boulevard, close to Soutel Drive and Sibbald Road.
When officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office arrived, they performed CPR on Micah until Jacksonville Fire and Rescue paramedics took him to a local hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Witnesses described the scene, noting that they heard gunshots and attempted to help Micah before calling the police.
The investigation led by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit resulted in the identification and arrest of three suspects. A 16-year-old, whose name was not disclosed due to age, and Isaiah Conner, 23, were arrested and charged with Micah’s murder. Additionally, Lamaya Hillis, 20, was charged with accessory after the fact in connection to Micah’s murder.
Micah was remembered fondly by his family and community. His grandmother, Nina Smith, described him as “a shining light” who brought his family together. He enjoyed activities such as riding dirt bikes and breeding dogs. His family recalled his energetic and caring nature, often highlighting his efforts to ensure his siblings were always with him.
The community and family continue to cope with the loss of Micah, who left a lasting impact on those who knew him. His death marked the first homicide of the year in Jacksonville, and it has had a profound effect on his loved ones and the community at large.
