Lieutenant Robert Joseph Staab, a 32-year-old officer with the Bal Harbour Police Department in Florida, tragically lost his life on October 31, 1957. On that fateful day, Lieutenant Staab was working undercover at a large convention held at 9801 Collins Avenue. While on duty, he and his partner noticed a suspicious individual moving from door to door in the hotel's swimming pool area. The officers decided to question the man, leading to a confrontation. During the struggle between the suspect and Lieutenant Staab's partner, the suspect managed to draw a .32 caliber handgun and shot Lieutenant Staab as he approached the scene. The suspect then fled but was apprehended shortly after in Hollywood, Florida.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Lieutenant Staab. The legal proceedings culminated in the suspect being convicted and sentenced to death. In 1961, the offender was executed for the crime. This case highlights the dangers law enforcement officers face daily and the ultimate sacrifice Lieutenant Staab made in the line of duty. His death left behind a grieving family, including his wife and three sons, and a community that continues to honor his memory and service.
